A brand new speciality coffee cafe and roastery is giving customers a real home from home in Southport town centre.
Heimat Coffee has opened on the colourful Wesley Street – known as ‘the village in the town’ – next door to the new Southport Veterans Centre, which opened in December.
The venue serves up seasonal roasts in micro batches, cakes and light bites.
Heimat is a German word meaning ‘home’.
The business is owned by local couple and coffee lovers Nate Augustin, who was born and raised in Southport, and Miriam Augustin, who grew up in Paderborn, in Westphalia in Germany.
They launched their website, www.sehnsucht.coffee last year, before deciding to open their first high street coffee shop.
They describe Sehnsucht Coffee as “a roastery birthed out of a few simple ideas, like what if a coffee business was owned by coffee nerds”.
They are now enjoying running Heimat Coffee in Southport.
Nate and Miriam said: “Heimat Coffee is our first retail site as Sehnsucht Coffee Roasters which was launched in early 2020.
“We have been baristas in Southport for the past four or five years and are extremely excited to launch our first venture together.”
Nate has a specialty coffee background and has worked as a barista, trainer and consultant for many cafes locally.
Miriam, who was born in Germany, comes from a culture celebrating excellent coffee and cake.
Nate and Miriam said: “Heimat Coffee is oriented around values of home, minimalism and customer experience.
“Being Southport’s first specialty coffee cafe and roastery allows us to serve the very best grade Arabica single origins from around the world. We work with UK based importers to bring coffee from Brazil, Kenya, Colombia, Peru and many other origins.
“Alongside house roasted coffee we also offer an array of home-made cakes and pastries including brownies, cinnamon buns and a coveted blackberry crumble bake!
“Beyond that we offer a small food menu with specialist toasties and other light bites that we hope to extend coming into this summer.
“Heimat itself is a German word meaning home. It evokes imagery of familiarity, warmth and belonging; and for Southport we believe coffee has found a new home.”
