New Royales bar in Southport is gaining a reputation for hosting great live music nights
A new bar with a 12ft wall mounted electric guitar on the wall is enjoying bringing great live music nights to Southport. Royales is situated at 13 Lord Street, next door to Boulevard West. After months in lockdown and then more months of severe Covid restrictions in place as bars eventually reopened, people have missed seeing singers and bands on nights out. Royales has been busy making up for that, with acclaimed local acts appearing including: Jenny Wren, Kelly Bond, Dickie McStein, Paper Heart, Astrid, Chris Hesketh, David Walker, Mike Rimmer, Jamie Wooding, Babs from Fag Ash Lil and others. The live music venue is owned by RK bars Ltd and employs six people. Royales opened following the refurbishment of what used to be a swimming pool shop. The bar features an impressive 12 foot wall mounted electric guitar, ceiling lights and modern yet comfortable seating. There is a parasol pavement terrace outside. The owners have ensured that original and decorative features such as the tiled floor highlights have remained and have been restored. They said: “‘We envisaged an exciting new venue in this part of town that would cater for local people in the area, tourists and musicians. “Our […]

The ArtHouse in Southport hosts special exhibition by local watercolour artist Steve Rigby
By Martin Dawber Southport watercolour artist, Steve Rigby, takes painting ‘en plein air’ to a new level. Some of the local scenes he has painted started as sketches on the back of betting slips: “I take betting slips and pens from the bookies when I go in to put a bet on the football. They’re free art materials,” he furtively admits. Odds are, Steve’s backed another winner with his upcoming exhibition at The ArtHouse on Eastbank Street in Southport (10th – 21st August). When the weather permits, Steve is often seen out on location, sensitively capturing the reality of painting in situ. His impressionistic watercolours follow a similar path to earlier artists like Monet, Turner and van Gogh, convinced by the value of working in the open air under natural light. “I try to create atmosphere and mood in my paintings. It’s about tone, rather than colour. I don’t use many colours, it’s about light.” Despite watercolour’s notoriety as a difficult medium to control, Steve’s atmospheric scenes seem effortlessly conjured by the skilful application of his brush and paints. They are anchored on the page by a loose articulation that potently conjures up impressionistic mementos of his travels. Watercolours always […]

The historic Lakeside Miniature Railway, which runs alongside the Marine Lake on the seafront at Southport, was opened in 1911 and is one of the oldest continually running miniature railways in the world. A report prepared for Supreme Attractions Ltd by RAL Chartered Architects said: “The project is to install a large wheel attraction with small bistro / café on a temporary (3 years) permission, to be located at the eastern edge of Princes Park, Southport on the site of a redundant and derelict public convenience. “The wheel is to be located on the site of a redundant public convenience.
